The Naval Postgraduate School

Mission

Provide relevant and unique advanced education and research programs in order to increase the combat effectiveness of United States and allied armed forces and enhance the security of the United States.

Academics

NPS is a leader in Computer Science and Information Technology Management and is substantially engaged in information-technology graduate education for the future of the Navy, the Department of Defense, and the Nation.  Other academic areas are strong programs in mechanical, electrical, and aeronautical engineering, systems analysis and operations research, physics, meteorology and oceanography. NPS programs are unique because they focus on the interface between NPS management programs and investigate the Revolution in Business Affairs as it applies to the Department of Defense. The National Security Affairs Department concentrates on civil military relations and foreign area studies.

Research

NPS research is an essential part of graduate education, which advances national security by challenging students with creative problem-solving experiences on defense issues.

NPS has fourteen academic departments within four degree granting graduate schools:

            -Graduate School of Business and Public Policy

            -Graduate School of Engineering and Applied Sciences

            -Graduate School of Operations & Information Sciences

            -School of International Graduate Studies

Faculty

Nearly 600 faculty members, (including 244 tenured or tenure track appointments and 40 military officers). Nearly all have doctorate degrees.

Nearly 1800 graduate students, (including 272 international students from 51 countries).

Driving Directions to the Naval Postgraduate School

From San Francisco and San Jose

  • Take US Route 101 South to Prunedale
  • At Prunedale, take CA Route 156 (West) to CA Route 1 (South)
  • Proceed on CA Route 1 (South) to Monterey
  • Take the "Del Monte Avenue" exit
  • Follow the signs to Del Monte Avenue and turn left on Sloat Avenue
  • Turn left at stop sign to enter 10th Street Gate
  • Approximately 116 miles

From Los Angeles and San Diego

  • Take US Hwy 5 North to Sacramento
  • At Lost Hills, take CA Route 46 west to Paso Robles
  • At Paso Robles, take US Route 101 north to Salinas. At Salinas, take CA Route 68 west to Monterey
  • Follow 68 to Monterey… that is, stay left onto CA Route 1 (south)
  • Immediately take the “Monterey Exit” off of CA Route 1 (south)
  • Stay in the left hand lane of the exit. Turn left at the first light… onto Aguajito Road
  • Follow Aguajito south to and take a left at Mark Thomas Drive (approx. ½ mile).
  • Follow Mark Thomas Drive and take a left onto Sloat Avenue
  • Turn right at stop sign to enter 10th Street Gate.
  • Approximately 335 miles

From Monterey Peninsula Airport

  • Upon leaving immediate vicinity of Passenger Terminal, Olmstead Road bears to the right, away from runway
  • Take first right onto Garden Road
  • Take Garden Road westbound for approx. 2 miles to first stop light and make a left onto Mark Thomas Drive
  • Proceed on Mark Thomas Drive for approx. ¾ mile to first traffic light
  • Take a right onto Sloat Avenue
  • Turn right at stop sign to enter 10th Street Gate.
  • Approximately 2.5 miles
