Retired Rear Admiral Merrill Ruck became the Executive Director of the Naval Postgraduate School Foundation on October 1, 2005 and handed over the reigns in May 2013. He moved to the Monterey Peninsula from North Carolina after serving 34 years as a Naval Officer. During his time in the Navy, RADM Ruck served as officer in charge of a Swift Boat in Vietnam, Commanding Officer of USS Bagley FF1069, Engineering Officer USS Coral Sea CV43, Commander Destroyer Squadron 31, Assistant Deputy Director Political Military Affairs in the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Commander Naval Base San Francisco. Valerie Abati is the Director of Membership and Programming for the Naval Postgraduate School Foundation. She began working for the NPS Foundation in November 2012. Originally from the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania area, Valerie moved to California from Cincinnati Ohio. While spending several years as an on-air meteorologist for different television stations, Valerie has also spent much of her time working for numerous non-profit organizations. Melissa Judy is the Director of Communications for the NPS Foundation. She began working for the NPS Foundation in April 2012 and is the NPS Foundation website administrator. She also produces the quarterly newsletter, maintains the social media accounts and produces other print and online media for the NPS Foundation. Prior to her work at the NPS Foundation, Mrs. Judy worked as the Communications Specialist for the Alumni Association at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla. Mrs. Judy is a graduate of George Mason University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and also holds a Master of Science in Higher Education Administration degree from Drexel University. Karen Woodson is the Peacock Gift Shop Coordinator for the NPS Foundation. She began working for the NPS Foundation in March 2010. Ms. Woodson is originally from Fayetteville, NC and lived there until she moved to Monterey in January 2006. She obtained an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice at Fayetteville Technical Community College. After graduation she took a few years to focus her time as a stay-at-home mother. Previously, Ms. Woodson was an Elementary School Teaching Assistant for the Cumberland County School System in Fayetteville, NC. [view full bio]
Valerie Jensen began working for the NPS Foundation part time in 1991 as the only paid staff. She worked full time for the Foundation from 2005 until 2008, when she again moved to part time status. Originally from Bremerton, Washington, she graduated from Western Washington State College (now WSU) with degrees in English and Elementary Education. She taught in elementary schools in Washington, and in Japan for the Department of Defense. [view full bio]
