America's Heroes Charity Golf Tournament Unites Monterey Community in Support of Wounded Service Members

Posted: Wednesday, August 11, 2010

The America's Heroes Charity Golf Tournament, held August 10, 2010 has become a great platform for local military supporters to unite together to support wounded-in-action charities.  The NPS Foundation uses this annual fundraiser to raise funds which are then donated to Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, Sentinels of Freedom, and Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society.

Over 200 golfers filled the field on the Shore and Dunes courses of Monterey Peninsula Country Club (MPCC).  After a day of competitive golf, golfers and guests alike enjoyed cocktails on the MPCC veranda and the tournament winners were announced.

The guest of honor for the tournament was Admiral Mike Mullen, USN; Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who was also a member of the second place Dunes Course team.  Admiral Mullen gave thoughtful remarks to the group on the importance of community involvement in supporting military veterans.  Admiral Mullen challenged the audience to consider their role as a community in caring for wounded veterans as the VA and military cannot do it alone.  His message resonated with all in attendance and was strengthened by the two WIA speakers who gave thought provoking remarks of their own, Davey Lind and Travis Fugate.

Although final fundraising totals are not in at this time, this year looks to be the most successful event yet in the history of the tournament.  Next year's tournament is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, August 9, 2011.  Additional details on registration for next year's event will be published within the next few months.  Photos from the event are now available in the NPS Foundation Photo Gallery.
