NPS Updates

Funding Contract Awarded

Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) awarded a $42.4 million to Adams Communication and Engineering Technology, Inc. (ACET) to support NPS’ Task Order contract to expand partnerships in the development and fielding of autonomous systems and robotics. ACET, with support from their exclusive subcontractor Arizona State University Research Enterprise (ASURE), will provide NPS coordination and management for the contract which will support the unique research conducted at NPS by students with operational experience. Read more.

New Distance Learning Program

Beginning the fall, NPS’ Graduate School of Defense Management (GSDM) will be offering an enhanced Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) through the Low-residency Graduate Education Program (LGEP), a new pilot initiative of the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Warfighting Development (OPNAV N7). The program will feature greater time spent on NPS’ campus, allowing for more in-person interaction balanced with distance learning. Read more.

Naval Warfare Studies Institute Emerging Technology Series

The NPS Naval Warfare Studies Institute (NWSI) launched the Emerging Technology Series for Executives July 16 to connect senior military leaders, NPS faculty and students and Senior Industry Executives. The series aims to take advantage of the opportunities and challenges emerging technologies provide before they are widely available or even widely understood. Read more.

Hall of Fame Alumni Guest Lecture

NPS Hall of Fame Alumni VADM (Ret) Jan Tighe and GEN (Ret) Keith Alexander offered their thoughts on the future of 5G and its military applications in a Virtual Secretary of the Navy Guest Lecture. Both answered questions posed by current NPS students and engaged in a little light-hearted Army/Navy rivalry. Read more.


Rising Competition in Space

On July 9th, NPSAAF hosted a discussion on the global competition for space, with a focus on Russia and China. NPSAAF Advisor Admiral (Ret) James Ellis, NPS Professor Dr. Jim Newman, and alumni Major John Pross and Captain Andrea Writt discussed space as a domain of great power competition and NPS' role in the arena. Welcome Trustee Lerman

The foundation Board of Trustees is pleased to welcome a new member this month. Dr. Steve Lerman served as Provost of the Naval Postgraduate School for four years, retiring this spring. Prior to NPS, he served as Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs at The George Washington University and as an A. James Clark Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Read more.

Meet the NPSAAF Advisory Council

We continue our profiles of our Advisors.


Geoff Yang is the co-founder of Redpoint Ventures and has backed the launch of like, BlueFin, and TiVo. He serves on several board of Redpoint portfolio companies and others. Mr. Yang is an avid sports fan and has served on the boards of the U.S. Golf Association (USGA) and is an officer and trustee for the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee Foundation. Read more.


Admiral Robert Natter served Commander of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet and the first Commander of all U.S. Navy and Coast Guard homeland defense forces under the newly created Northern Command. He joined the board of directors of United Defense Industries in 2004 and is also President of R.J. Natter & Associates, LLC, a consulting firm. Admiral Natter serves on several boards and as Chairman of the United States Naval Academy's Distinguished Graduate Selection Committee.


A career submariner, Admiral Cecil Haney served as Commander from the Pacific and Indian oceans to U.S. Startegic Command (USSTRATCOM). He also served as a member of the Congressionally mandated Military Leadership Diversity Commission. Admiral Haney is an alumnus of the U.S. Naval Academy, the National Defense University, and the Naval Postgraduate School. Read more.


Admiral James Alexander "Sandy" Winnefeld served as the Joint Chiefs of Staff as well as Commander of U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) and North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). He is a Distinguished Professor at the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at Georgia Tech and a senior nonresident fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
