Voices of Special Operations

On November 12, at 3 pm Pacific (6 pm Eastern), the NPS Alumni Association and Foundation will host Special Operations Officers Colonel John Crisafulli, MAJ Chad Alford, MAJ Scott Cook, MAJ Wes Dyson, and Maj Chris Gallegos to hear their stories from the field. The student body of the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) is made up of mid-career military professionals with eight to ten years of service. Many come to NPS with something that needs to be repaired or significantly improved. Due to the rigors of military service, the needs can be physical, mental, emotional, or social. Though the challenges are as diverse as the students themselves, all of them need to be better prepared to transition to their new roles and responsibilities after they graduate. The function of the jointly resourced NPS Human Enhancement Research Group (HERG) is to serve as a center for research and innovation in the field of human enhancement, and additionally, to conduct a holistic refit/recovery for NPS students and family.

The War for Autonomy Event

On October 29, Paul Scharre, a Senior Fellow and Director of Technology and National Security Program at the Center for New American Security and Dr. Ray Buettner, Associate Professor at NPS, led a superb dialogue about the war for autonomy and the current state of practice. This riveting conversation highlighted several themes such as “Machines accomplish tasks; Humans accomplish missions” and concern whether autonomy would make conflict more or less likely.  Perhaps more importantly, the conversation responded to the many questions of the audience posted in the chat. The discussion highlighted the unique role played by the Naval Postgraduate School in leading the adoption of autonomy and the operational concepts to leverage the opportunities for swarming behavior and human-machine teaming. If you missed it live, the recording is available below.

BENS Virtual Poster Session

On December 10, the Palo Alto Chapter of Business Executives for National Security (BENS) will host a virtual poster session for NPS students. This event follows a similar one in January 2020 where students presented their ideas, capstone projects, and big ideas to senior executives from a broad cross section of Silicon Valley companies. It is a great opportunity for students to showcase their completed work, identify potential partners for ongoing research, or receive feedback on their big ideas.  The NPS Alumni Association and Foundation is pleased to coordinate this event with the BENS leadership.  Especially for this year, students will be producing short videos of their presentations.  We look forward to sharing their presentations with you.
