Beloved member of our NPS community, Tony Kendall recently passed away after a long battle with cancer. Tony served as a lecturer in the Information Sciences Department for over two decades, and was highly respected by both his colleagues and students.

Tony was a long-time member of the Information Sciences department where he taught the Visual Basic programming class that focused on the concepts of object-oriented programming. Tony also headed up the team that designed the Oracle-based tool called FIRE that tracked research projects and allowed for collaboration among participants.

Tony was involved in many programs across campus including Scientists at Sea and the Hartnell Internship Program where he served as a mentor for young STEM professionals.

“As an academic community, we have a social responsibility to engage and work with the community. … We are not an island unto ourselves, we are a part of the local community,” Tony said of the Hartnell Program.

Prior to joining NPS, Tony was a Naval Flight Officer in the E-130 TACAMO (Take Charge & Move Out) aircraft used to maintain comms between the decision makers and nuclear delivery systems.

Tony will be deeply missed, and our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Tony's wife Irene has requested that, in lieu of flowers, gifts be made to the Naval Postgraduate School Foundation in his memory. Irene will be notified of all gifts made.
