Hank Plain

Chair of the Board of Trustees, NPS Foundation

Mr. Hank Plain is a general partner of Lightstone Ventures. He focuses on medical device investments out of the firm's Menlo Park office. Mr. Plain also serves as a general partner at Morgenthaler Ventures, which he joined in 2007 after more than 25 years in the life science industry.

​Mr. Plain began his career in 1980 at Eli Lilly, where he worked for 12 years in various management positions. He left Lilly to become CEO of Perclose, where he led the company through a successful IPO and acquisition by Abbott Laboratories. Prior to becoming a venture capitalist, he co-founded eight medical device companies along with the team at The Foundry medical device incubator.

​Mr. Plain serves on the boards of Earlens, Moximed, Nuvaira and Setpoint Medical. He is an advisor and lecturer for the Stanford University Biodesign Program. He previously served on the boards of eight companies that were acquired – Claret, Twelve Medical, Ardian, Access Closure, Acclarent, Cabochon, EPI and TransVascular.

​Mr. Plain also serves on the board of the Future Citizens Foundation/First Tee of Monterey County. He was co-chair of the American Heart Association Research Roundtable. He also served for six years on the board of trustees and chaired the development committee for Woodside Priory School in Portola Valley, California.

​Mr. Plain was born in Springfield, Illinois. He and Lisa, his wife of 37 years, live in California. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri – Columbia.
