Kenneth Petersen

Trustee, NPS Foundation

Ken Petersen is President and CEO of Monterey Private Wealth. He has 30 years of experience in financial services.

Petersen specializes in investment portfolio management and advanced planning for professionals, retirees, and foundations. He holds an MBA with an emphasis in Finance from Old Dominion University in Virginia, an MS degree in Operations Research and Systems Analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey, and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. He is a graduate of the College of Financial Planning and a past participant in the Level II Endowment Institute at the Yale School of Management.

Petersen is board-certified as a Financial Planner by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards and accredited as an Investment Fiduciary Advisor by the Center for Fiduciary Studies (fi360). Before entering investment management, Petersen co-founded a tax and financial planning software company in 1981, where he wrote and published financial software for the IBM PC. He sold his half of the company to a private equity firm in 1988 and has dedicated himself to investment management ever since.

Petersen writes a Financial Planning column that appears every Thursday morning in the Monterey County Herald. He served on the Board of Directors of the Big Sur International Marathon during its first eight years and currently serves as Chairman of the Investment Committee of the Community Foundation of Monterey County and as Trustee, Secretary, Treasurer, and Chairman of the Investment Committee for the Naval Postgraduate School Foundation in Monterey. He is a past-president of the Pacific Grove Rotary Club and a past-commander and a current volunteer pilot for the Monterey County Sheriff’s Aero Squadron.

In a prior life he was a U.S. Marine Corps fighter pilot. Petersen currently flies his Cessna 182 airplane to various destinations in the western United States. He enjoys hiking, riding bikes with his family around the Monterey Peninsula, and reading.

‚ÄčIn April 2007, VADM Oliver was appointed by the Secretary of the Navy as the first full time civilian President of the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey, CA. NPS has offered advanced degrees in a broad spectrum of subjects to military officers and civilians in the national security sector for over a century. During President Oliver's tenure, NPS met all accreditation standards and experienced significant growth both in number and diversity of students and faculty and in the amount and scope of research funding. He retired from federal service in December 2012. Oliver currently chairs the Monterey Bay Defense Alliance and is a member of the California Governor's Military Council.
