Vance Coffman

Trustee Emeritus, NPS Foundation

Dr. Vance Coffman retired in April 2005 as Chairman of Lockheed Martin Corporation. Dr. Vance Coffman joined Lockheed in 1967, as a guidance and control systems analyst in the Space Systems Division. After leading the development of several major space programs and large ground data processing systems, he was appointed a vice president in 1985. From there, he held multiple leadership positions including President of the Space Systems Division, where he was responsible for the Hubble Space Telescope; the MILSTAR Satellite communications program; and the Follow-on Early warning system; and the corporation’s work on Iridium.

In 2002, Dr. Coffman was named Chairman of the President’s National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee and was selected to be the Chairman of the Aerospace Industries Association for the year 2003. He currently serves on the board of directors for 3M Company, Amgen Inc, and Deere & Co.

Dr. Coffman received his B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from Iowa State University and Masters and Doctoral degrees in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University.  Notable accolades include receiving an honorary Doctor of Law from Pepperdine University, and being elected as a Fellow in both the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and in the American Astronautical Society.

Dr. Coffman serves on the Board of Trustees for the NPS Foundation. He resides in Pebble Beach, California with his wife Arlene. They have two grown daughters.
