A team from the Naval Postgraduate School Foundation joined industry and defense leaders in Washington, D.C., Oct. 27-29, for the NVIDIA GTC, representing NPS and showcasing the institution as an AI accelerator for the Department of the Navy and the Joint Force. Throughout various engagements, the NPS Foundation demonstrated NPS as a convening place for prototyping and developing solutions that are technically grounded and operationally relevant.
The Naval Postgraduate School will be the first command in the Department of the Navy and the Department of War to receive NVIDIA’s newest AI supercomputer, the NVIDIA DGX GB300, empowering NPS to advance AI education, research and innovation for national security. The announcement, made by NVIDIA on Oct. 28, highlights the company’s commitment to NPS and its unique mission leveraging a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) signed in December 2024.
NPS will use the DGX GB300 and NVIDIA Mission Control software to support over 1,500 in-resident students, 600 faculty and thousands of external partners, with plans to expand its infrastructure in the future. The system is being put to work empowering the new NVIDIA AI Technology Center at NPS for applications in everything from complex mission planning to autonomous systems simulations to disaster recovery so that U.S. service members and partners are better positioned strategically to lead with AI. Following the Oct. 28 announcement, NPS Foundation's Executive VP Todd Lyons and NVIDIA's VP of DGX Systems Charlie Boyle sat down during a fireside chat at GTC to discuss how NPS is using AI tools and technologies, such as the DGX GB300, to empower researchers, service members and practitioners to innovate, collaborate on and deploy solutions to the nation’s most pressing problems.
“It’s about creating those tech-enabled leaders who can build, adapt and innovate,” said Lyons, referring to NPS’ role as a naval AI accelerator for the Department of the Navy and the Joint Force and the institution’s mission to educate the next generation of leaders by exposing them to new technologies, new ways of thinking and collaborative opportunities.
The pair discussed ongoing projects at NPS -- such as maritime security, aviation maintenance, space-domain awareness, and global endurance flight -- that are using currently deployed tools and technologies brought to NPS by NVIDIA and an ecosystem of partners. They also highlighted how the DGX GB300 will further enable research, education and collaboration in these projects and many more across a variety of disciplines and operational areas.
“If you have subject matter expertise, data, resources, etc., and you want to figure out how we can put capabilities in the hands of our service members, we [NPS and the NPS Foundation] are here to help you do that," said Lyons. Watch the session on demand here.

On Oct. 28, the NPS Foundation hosted an event for government and industry key leaders focused on Operationalizing AI for the Warfighter. The NPS Foundation leadership highlighted the relationship between NPS and NVIDIA and the ecosystem of partners, the DGX GB300 announcement, and the ongoing research and innovation at NPS. The remarks set the stage for attendees to engage with each other on collaborative opportunities and learn more about NPS as a convening place for organizations to move solutions to the warfighter faster.
On Oct. 29, the NPS Foundation and our partner, Sterling, hosted an NPS Alumni & Networking Reception. The event provided an opportunity for alumni, industry partners, and guests to grow their networks, learn about what NPS is doing in AI and other emerging technologies, and explore how to get involved with research, education and other initiatives. Attendees also heard from NVIDIA's Mark Weatherford, MS In Information Technology Management '94, about how NPS provided a foundation in education and applied research that has enabled both his military and industry career.
